Marília Xavier Cury (MAE-USP) on a scientific mission to the National Museum of Archaeology and Santos Rocha Municipal Museum

National Museum of Archaeology, Santos Rocha Municipal Museum | February 8 and March 27, 2023

Marília Xavier Cury, professor and researcher of the Museum of Archeology and Ethnology of the University of São Paulo, was in a scientific meeting with several members of the project at the National Museum of Archeology on February 8, 2023. In this meeting the researcher and the project members were able to observe a Kaingang tribe’s pot, an ethnographic object from the National Museum of Archeology’s collection (target of the TRANSMAT project) and reflect on the results of this research. Marília Xavier Cury allowed us to deepen our knowledge about this object, contributing with a reading of the context of the relationship between the Portuguese and the Kaigang at the beginning of the 20th century, the contours of the context in which the piece was collected, and its cultural significance to its group of origin. A process that is documented by the TRANSMAT project, enriching the history of this object in the Museum.

On March 27, 2023 Professor Marília Xavier Cury visited the Santos Rocha Municipal Museum. On this occasion she had another working meeting with the TRANSMAT project team members and a visit to the collections on display and in its visitable reserves. The visit was guided by Manuela Silva, Ana Margarida Ferreira and Ana Paula Cardoso. Also in focus were the numerous collections from Brazil, their acquisition contexts, and their itinerary.

The informal consultancy kindly granted to the project researchers will in the future be formalized on an individual level with Professor Marilia Xavier Cury and on an institutional level with the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology of the University of São Paulo.
